Hi, I brought this up on a raffle for an x-box live giftcard and it didn't go over very well.
I've mentioned this site to many people, but they didn't see many prizes they wanted so they didn't stay. I frowned on the x-box live giftcard for several reasons.
1. It requires specific hardware to be useful.
2. It requires specific interest (downloadable games) to be useful.
3. The specific interest is common to people already using the site. (so it doesn't add many users)
4. It doesn't look easy to sell compared to a piece of hardware.
5. Another prize could do the same thing and more, without costing more. (Amazon sells x-box live points and games so an Amazon giftcard would be just as good for someone looking to purchase something on x-box live.)
Another prize that I don't think adds many new users is the papercrafts magazine. It doesn't require hardware like the x-box live card, but it still requires a specific interest, can't be sold, and could be just as good as another prize like a giftcard to a store that sells it; but I do appreciate that it isn't geared towards the current users of this site, so that may help attract others to join.
My favorite prizes are the ones everybody would want and will attract more users like the general store (or credit card company) giftcards, the atomic earbuds since almost everyone has something that can use headphones such as the computer they use to come here, iPods since the person already has access to a computer, or netflix subscriptions since DVD players are very common. Blu-ray players, consoles, DVD players, and Tivos (or other DVRs) are good since most people have TVs but some people might not actually know what they are or just not want them. The good news on all hardware is that you can sell it, that also goes with specific DVDs, cell phones, and portable consoles like the DSi or PSP.
What are other suggestions for good and not-so-good prizes?
