Adding general appeal

Hi, I brought this up on a raffle for an x-box live giftcard and it didn't go over very well.

I've mentioned this site to many people, but they didn't see many prizes they wanted so they didn't stay.   I frowned on the x-box live giftcard for several reasons.

    1. It requires specific hardware to be useful.

    2. It requires specific interest (downloadable games) to be useful.

    3. The specific interest is common to people already using the site.  (so it doesn't add many users)

    4. It doesn't look easy to sell compared to a piece of hardware.

    5. Another prize could do the same thing and more, without costing more. (Amazon sells x-box live points and games so an Amazon giftcard would be just as good for someone looking to purchase something on x-box live.)

Another prize that I don't think adds many new users is the papercrafts magazine.  It doesn't require hardware like the x-box live card, but it still requires a specific interest, can't be sold, and could be just as good as another prize like a giftcard to a store that sells it; but I do appreciate that it isn't geared towards the current users of this site, so that may help attract others to join.

My favorite prizes are the ones everybody would want and will attract more users like the general store (or credit card company) giftcards, the atomic earbuds since almost everyone has something that can use headphones such as the computer they use to come here, iPods since the person already has access to a computer, or netflix subscriptions since DVD players are very common.  Blu-ray players, consoles, DVD players, and Tivos (or other DVRs) are good since most people have TVs but some people might not actually know what they are or just not want them.  The good news on all hardware is that you can sell it, that also goes with specific DVDs, cell phones, and portable consoles like the DSi or PSP.

What are other suggestions for good and not-so-good prizes?

How about a green prize pack, something people would like to buy but usually don't; like a compact florescent lightbulb and a raffstar branded reusable grocery bag; that would also get more attention for the site.

I don't know how many even know what a  compact florescent lightbulb or who would want that. The grocery bag does not seem like a bad idea as long it is just not the bag and there is something inside the bag.

I think general appeal is right on target. But maintaining the current members right now also needs to be done. Which running adds on things like diggnation is going to bring geeks.  Not sure if there have been any adds other than that. Right now the site still seems very slow. So what ever the  general appeal will be to get more members I think is really needed. Other wise people will get bored.

As for the items them selves I think more Visa gift cards, Walmart, things people can generally use in there lives. Food, ect.

But then again anyone were to join right now and see how long its really taking people to get there prizes that might run them off too. I mean if someone is looking to really want to win something they need or want.  They are probably going to really want to receive it in 4-6 weeks. Or whatever it says. Don't get me wrong, anything free is good to me. But not everyone thinks that way.

I suppose the easiest prizes to send are giftcards, but I'm sure that'll improve as the site grows and has more employees.

Another green prize idea is giving a water pitcher that has a filter in it instead of buying bottles of water.  How does that sound?

Gift cards also save on shipping especially if online ones that could just be emailed. Speed would also be a bonus.

Well since there is talk about having to wait on suppliers I guess they don't have to have the prize in hand when the raffle starts. That being said the hold up probably has more to do with waiting on as much money to come in from add clicks and such to pay for the prize itself to even be shipped.  Then once money is in for the prize suppliers are probably contacted then who knows how long it could take if its out of raffstars hands.  But I am thinking its more a money deal and lag time with that. Cause I cant see any supplier taking as long as its has taken people to get a gift card..

I haven't won anything so I can't react to wait times, but reducing any aspect of wait, in this case shipping, will improve customer satisfaction, if only those few customers.
